Ahead drum sticks

has any one tried Ahead (aluminum) drum sticks?T he drummer in my son's bands bought a set and tried them out on New Years Eve. During the sound check his snare sounded weird and when we tried a wooden stick the snare had a fuller sound. I had a go with the sticks for a few minutes and decided I would never use them for myself. I did not like the sound or the feel of them as they seems to flew a little when you strike the head which I think is choking the sound..

the set had been left on my band rehearsal room so I had a bit more of a try of them. I also noticed that after a while the sleeves can become "ring barked" (for want of a better term) and slip over the end of the tip.
There was no comparison when you hit the same drum with a wooden and then an "Ahead" stick. The Wooden had a much fuller & meatier sound where as the Ahead were thin and weak. My theory is that with the slight flexing of the stick and the damping o fte rubber sleeves chokes the sound.
Reminds me of years ago when I first started drumming there were horrible green fibreglass sticks - the looked felt and sounded awful and were not around for long - Probably a health hazard too!!!
