xx grouping notes on charts
« Thread started on: May 18th, 2007, 04:55am »

I generally scratch out my transcriptions using groups of notes the way they are written in 4/4 time irregardless of the time signature. When I go from the scratch to the software produced chart, I notice that the grouping of the notes is different depending on the meter. For instance in 7/8 time, eighth notes are grouped 3-3-1 instead of a preferred (for me) 4-3. Sometimes I allow this but other times, I find it difficult to sight them especially with multi voices and note values and I end up putting the notes down in a 4/4 measure and then copying and pasting them into the odd signature measure to keep the grouping that I am most familiar with.

Theoretically, is this OK or is there a rule as to how to group your notes?

I think it really depends on the feel.

if you were playing a 7/8 bar with a 3 feel, then group the notes in threes, eg.

1 and a 2 and a 3 1 and a 2 and a 3 1...

If playing a 4/4 feel, then you would group the notes in 4s or 2s, whatever you prefer.
